Taking the summit stage at E Tipu 2022 is quantitative geneticist leading world-first research and sustainable seaweed CEO

E Tipu is the ultimate place to zoom out, connect, and collaborate on what’s shaping the future of our primary industries. Primary industry leaders, changemakers and teams who attend the summit are in for two days of talks from world leaders in food and fibre.

New to the speaker lineup are two remarkable leaders championing sustainability and innovation in Aotearoa, with global influence.

Dr Suzanne Rowe is a passionate advocate for science and a leader in helping agriculture adapt to meet the challenges of climate change. She's a quantitative geneticist working for crown research institute AgResearch with a focus on livestock breeding.

Leading a team of researchers, Suzanne successfully demonstrated breeding low methane emitting sheep — a development that can be used to combat climate change. This knowledge is now being rolled out to the sheep industry across Aotearoa. In 2021, her team won the Supreme Award at the Science New Zealand Awards for this world-first research.

Beyond the scientific breakthroughs addressing greenhouse gas emissions from sheep, Suzanne is building on this progress to develop genomic tools for better breeding of other farmed animals, such as cattle and deer.

Joining Suzanne as a champion of impact and speaking at E Tipu 2022 is Clare Bradley, CEO of AgriSea. Clare works in community-led research and sustainable product development. She believes Aotearoa has the opportunity to live up to its international image of being a clean, green, high-value economy providing quality products while achieving the best living standards in the world.

Recently stepping into the role of CEO, Clare’s work with sustainable seaweed biostimulant company AgriSea spans over 16 years. AgriSea is a Māori-owned, family-operated business creating an enormous impact on Aotearoa’s farms and orchards. They sustainably collect seaweed from remote shores of coastal New Zealand and, at their Paeroa-based factory, brew their harvest into a nutrient rich concentrate. The final product works with the entire ecosystem of farms and orchards to improve the outcomes for soil, pasture, plant and animal health.

In 2019, Clare was named woman of the year at the Rural Women New Zealand Business Awards for her focus on increasing value through the entire supply chain with AgriSea. Currently her work with the Our Land and Water National Science Challenge is weaving indigenous, farming and science knowledge with soil health.

E Tipu is about supporting Aotearoa’s food and fibre ecosystem to thrive in our changing world. Our speaker lineup of local and international primary sector leaders gets to the heart of that kaupapa.
