Panel: The Future of Food Innovation

There is little doubt that New Zealand is a global leader in food innovation, food production and food exports. We have a long history of innovation, high quality food production and a commitment to sustainability.

But we face an enormous challenge. We need to help feed a growing population, while continuing to respond to changing consumer demands and changing food market dynamics in an increasingly carbon constrained world.

This requires us to push boundaries to diversify and evolve our food story. At E Tipu 2024, we’re bringing together a panel of three food innovators and an expert host to discuss the complex and challenging food innovation ecosystem in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Hosting the panel is CEO of FoodHQ Victoria Hatton. FoodHQ is an industry think tank built to drive sustainable food systems in New Zealand. It’s the largest collaboration of food, science and innovation in the country. Victoria specialises in bridging the divide between science, policy, innovation and advocacy.

On the panel is food tech entrepreneur Mrinali Kumar. As co-founder of EatKinda, Mrinali is transforming conscious eating — starting with cauliflower ice cream. She’s dedicated to leveraging her technical expertise and innovative ideas to address global challenges such as food waste and climate change.

Also joining the panel is the co-founder and CEO of Opo Bio, Olivia Ogilvie. Opo Bio, Aotearoa New Zealand’s first cultivated meat startup, develops enabling technology for the cultivated meat industry. Olivia’s tech expertise and passion for the future of food is directed towards providing the world with cell lines to scale cultivated meat.

Rounding out the panel is co-founder of Daisy Lab, Irina Millar. Irina is a business consultant turned deep-tech entrepreneur. She has a particular interest in precision fermentation technology, sparked while she was working in the dairy industry. Daisy Lab’s mission is to revolutionise food production by creating dairy-identical ingredients using microbes, not cows.
